Eugen Goettling of Austria set a new world record in the CNF Masters M1 category with a dive to 74 meters at the 2026 CMAS World Championship Freediving Depth held in Roatan. The previous record stood at 72 meters. In a photo from the event, Goettling is seen gripping a rope, his wetsuit and cap visible above the water's surface as he prepares for his descent.

The achievement was made in the Constant Weight Without Fins (CNF) discipline, a form of freediving where the athlete descends and ascends using only their strength and technique, without the aid of fins. This discipline is considered one of the most challenging in freediving due to the physical and mental demands it places on the athlete.

The 2026 CMAS World Championship Freediving Depth took place at the Roatan Freediving School & Training Center in West Bay Beach, Roatan, from August 14 to August 27. Organized by the World Underwater Federation, this event is a premier competition in the freediving calendar, attracting top athletes from around the world.

Reflecting on his performance, Goettling stated, "CNF is never easy. You never know how it's going to turn out. But this day all the training payed off and I was so strong that the felt quite easy. Thanks to my mental and health coach and little Sister Tito."
