Eugen Goettling of Austria set a new world record in the FIM Men Masters M1 category at the 2026 CMAS World Championship Freediving Depth, achieving a depth of 106 meters. The previous record of 97 meters was surpassed during the competition held at the Roatan Freediving School & Training Center in Roatan, Honduras.

Freediving, also known as apnea, is a sport that involves diving underwater without the use of breathing apparatus. The FIM (Free Immersion) category requires divers to pull themselves down and up the line using their arms, without the use of fins. This discipline tests the diver's ability to manage oxygen consumption and maintain focus under pressure.

The 2026 CMAS World Championship Freediving Depth is a premier event in the freediving calendar, attracting top athletes from around the world. Held from August 14 to August 27, the championship provides a platform for divers to showcase their skills and set new benchmarks in the sport. The Roatan Freediving School & Training Center, located on West Bay Beach, is known for its clear waters and ideal conditions for depth diving.

In a photograph from the event, Goettling is seen in his freediving gear, sitting cross-legged on a platform, embodying the focus and calm required for the sport. Speaking after his record-breaking dive, Goettling said, "I prepared and trained good for this comp and I'm glad and very happy I made it and can bring the M1 title and WR back to Austria. Just don't give up and keep on going..."
